A Merry Hallowe'en

It is finally that most spooky and delightful of days, around which all of autumn, at least if you're like me, revolves. Old Halloween pictures are my absolute favourite. People earlier in this century seem to have been much more in touch with the true spirit of Halloween, and their ways of expressing it visually through costumes, decoration, illustration and photography were uniquely beautiful and often completely wacky. It is the scary movies of the 1920's and 30's that have become enduring iconic classics. Even the mass-produced decor had that distinctly handmade look, and everyone made their own costumes, so no two were alike, and all were imaginative. The character of Halloween in these early decades is the most recognizable. And because the 20s and 30s already have a slightly creepy black-and-white atmosphere about them, this only lends a better effect to the spookiness of Halloween.

I hope you enjoy looking at these marvelous Halloween pictures as thoroughly as I've enjoyed discovering and collecting them. As always, click the photos to view them full size. More to come later today!
