Those who knew her say that she could switch her movie star persona on and off. The whole world recognizes the image of perfectly coiffed gold curls, big red lips and thickly lashed bedroom eyes. It's almost impossible to imagine her any other way. But outside the spotlight, she was a human being, and it took plenty of primping to achieve that Vargas-girl perfection. We've seen her before, and we've seen her after, but it's less common to see her in the process of assuming her movie star look. Here are some photos I found fascinating: "Norma Jeane" going through the daily motions of becoming "Marilyn Monroe."

I think in this picture it's Norma Jeane we're seeing, not Marilyn. She looks so natural.
